What does Jesus really mean when He says "My reward is with me"? Pastor Dean Murphy walks through five specific crowns Scripture promises to believers—and what they require of us to receive them. In this sermon, we explore the Crown of Life for those who endure, the Incorruptible Crown for discipline, the Crown of Rejoicing for evangelism, the Crown of Glory for faithful leadership, and the Crown of Righteousness for perseverance. But Jesus also makes clear: we will give account for everything we've done in this body. The question isn't whether we'll be rewarded—it's what kind of reward awaits. My Reward
Rev 22:1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the riverstood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
Rev 22:3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.
Rev 22:6 The angel said to me, “These words are trustworthyand true. The Lord, the God who inspires the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must soon take place.” 7 “Look, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll.”
Rev 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.
Rev 22:8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. 9 But he said to me, “Don’t do that! Iam a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll. Worship God!”
Rev 22:10 Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, because the time is near. 11 Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong; let the vile person continue to be vile; let the one who does right continue to do right; and let the holy person continue to be holy.”
Rev 22:12 “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
The Crown of Life-
Jas 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. (also Rev 2:10).
This is given for those who endure / persevere through persecution/ martyrdom/ trials
The Incorruptible Crown-
(NET) 1Co 9:24 Do you not know that all the runners ina stadium compete, but only one receives the prize? So run to win. 25 Each competitor must exercise self-control in everything. They do it to receivea perish able crown, but we an imperishable one.
This reward is given on the basis of determination, discipline, and dedication in the Christian life.
The Crown of Rejoicing-
(NLT) 1Th 2:19 After all, what gives us hope and joy, and what will be our proud reward and crown as we stand before our Lord Jesus when he returns? It is you! 20 Yes, you are our pride and joy.given for pouring one self into others in evangelism anddiscipleship (see also Philippians 4:1).
The Crown of Glory—
1Pe 5:1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dish onest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
Given to leaders who faithfully shepherd, lead, serve God’s people
The Crown of Righteousness—
2Ti 4:6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
Given for endurance and perseverance and faithfulness in the course of life
As we think through the various actions that the Lordcommends (giving water in his name, visiting prisoners, caring for the poor)we have no reason to think these are the only “crowns” which will be given, but they do well-represent the “good deeds” the “things done in the body” which will be rewarded. Paul further alludes to just such an idea;
(NLT) Php 4:17 I don’t say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I want you to receive a reward for your kindness.
Kindness will be rewarded…
But there is another sobering aspect to rewards...
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgments eat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the thingsdone while in the body, whether good or bad.
1Co 3:11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person's work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.
1Co 9:27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not bedisqualified for the prize.
2Jn 1:8 Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.
Rev 4:10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: 11 "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."
Rev 22:12 “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that who ever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
